Jomon Jiyukan The Jomon Jiyukan locates by one of Japan’s largest prehistoric village ruins. These ruins are from approximately 5000 years ago, and the Jomon Jiyukan houses around 1700 artifacts found on the site. You can join in on museum tours (held twice a month) to further understand life during the prehistoric Jomon era. There are even events where you can experience creating Jomon era style bags and clay statues.

Hakkodamaru Memorial Ship Before the opening of the Seikan Tunnel, ferries were the main mode of transport between Hokkaido and Honshu (mainland Japan). The Hakkodamaru ferry operated for 23 years and 7 months, which was the longest out of all ferries. Today, the yellow ferry serves as a memorial to commemorate the ship’s long run. Inside the four-storey ship, you can tour the engine room, learn about the ferry’s encounters and more.

Aomori Museum of Art The Aomori Museum of Art locates next to one of Japan’s largest prehistoric village ruins. The exterior of the building is inspired by both prehistoric and modern Japanese arts. The museum carries works by both Japanese and international artists, such as artist Nara Yoshitomo (an Aomori native) and French painter Marc Chagall. Also inside the museum grounds, you can find a café serving dishes using ingredients from Aomori.

Nebuta Museum Wa Rasse Nebuta Museum Wa Rasse opened in 2011 as a place where both locals and visitors can learn more about Aomori’s Nebuta Festival. Inside are displays and videos explaining the festival’s history and characteristics. In the Nebuta Hall, you can find four real nebuta that were used in the Nebuta Festival. There are also some interactive booths, where you can have a hands-on Nebuta making experience.
