Hamamatsu Castle Hamamatsu Castle in Shizuoka prefecture was built in 1570 by Tokugawa Ieyasu. Ieyasu was the founder of the Tokugawa government during the Edo peiord (1603 – 1867), and lived in the castle for 17 years before starting his government. Many of the castle owners during the Edo Period grew to become high-position officials in the Tokugawa government. Because of this, the castle is nicknamed the “castle of advancement”. The castle keep was re-built in 1958, and inside are exhibits on the history of the castle and of Tokugawa Ieyasu. From the observatory, you can see a beautiful view of the city of Hamamatsu.
