Akita City Minzoku Geinou Densho-kan The Akita City Minzoku Geinou Densho-kan is a cultural museum located about at 15-minute walk away from Akita Station. The museum was made in 1992 to preserve and share Akita prefecture’s unique culture. Here, you can learn about the history of Akita prefecture, and watch special movies about the culture. There is even a display of a real kanto pole, used in the prefecture’s famous Kanto Festival. On weekends and holidays from April to October, you can watch the kanto performances live at the museum.

Akita Prefectural Museum of Art The Akita Prefectural Museum of Art opened in 1967, and displays a large collection of works gathered by artist and Kita native Hirano Masakichi. In the museum, you can check out the 20-meter long painting by Hirano, which depicts daily life, events and the history of Akita. The museum aims to express Akita prefecture in a creative, fun way.

Akita Red Brick Folk Museum The Akita Red Brick Fold Museum is a museum with a beautiful red brick façade. The building, built in 1903, was formerly Akita Bank’s main office and later designated as an important cultural property. At the museum, you can see artifacts and documents from the early 1900s. In the museum’s new building, cultural crafts and art pieces are on display.

Akita Kanto Festival The Akita Kanto Festival is held annually from August 3rd to the 6th. This festival is one of the Three Tohoku Festivals, along with Aomori’s Nebuta Festival and Miyagi’s Sendai Tanabata Festival. Huge bamboo poles with lanterns on them, called kanto, are balanced on different body parts. The kanto poles measure up to 12 meters in length and weigh up to 50 kilograms!
