Seiunji Temple "Seiunji" is a temple of the Rinzai sect Myoushinji school, standing in a corner of a quiet residential area of Arakawa Ward, Tokyo. In the Edo period, this area was a famous spot for cherry-blossom viewing, and it was called "Hanami-dera" (flower-viewing temple), along with the surrounding Shushoin temple. It was a popular recreational area, and was nicknamed "higurashi no sato" (meaning: a place you can pass the day in). In the precincts, there are monuments dedicated to Bakin Takizawa, known as the author of the late Edo period novel, Nanso Satomi Hakkenden, which is often visited by novel fans. Seiunji Temple is also the temple that houses the Ebisu statue of the Seven Gods of Yanaka (Yanaka Shichifukujin). The statue of Ebisu will be opened to the public only during the "Yanaka Shichifukujin Tour", which is held on January 1-10 every year.

It is a temple of the Nichiren sect, about a 2 minute walk from "Seunji Temple".The vibrant cherry-colored fence facing the road will impress you on first sight. Here, you can see a variety of figures of the god Hoteison drawn by Kenichi Yoshino, a painter from Arakawa Ward. Shushoin enshrines the statue of Hoteison, who is one of the seven Shichifukujin gods worshipped all around Japan. Shushoin belongs to a set of seven temples in Tokyo, which are referred to together as the Yanaka Shichifukujin. You can see the warm and gentle personality of Hoteison from his appearance on the statue. Like the neighboring "Seiun-ji", it was popular as a cherry-blossom viewing spot during the Edo period, so it is nicknamed the "Flower-viewing temple". The renown Ukiyo-e artist, Utagawa Hiroshige's famed "Hundred Views of Edo" contains a painting that is said to depict the cherry blossoms here.
